Don’t know how much fish oil to take?
Well you’re not alone, most people have no idea the correct dosage for fish oil.
And the truth is that the answer to the question “How much fish oil should I take?” really depends.
But what does it depend on?
It depends mainly on how much omega 6 fatty acids you get in your diet.
Why is that important?
Well the main reason to take fish oil in the first place is that it contains high amounts of omega 3 fatty acids. And the balance of omega 3 to omega 6 is very important to your overall health.
Basically, if you get too much omega 6 in your diet it can lead to many different dangerous health effects. Some of these include: inflammation, heart disease, accelerated aging, among others.
But how do you correct the over consumption of omega 6 in your diet? It’s actually pretty easy, you just need to get more omega3 into your diet.
What are foods that contain omega 6?
Mainly they include any vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and animal fats such as chicken and pork are high in omega 6 fatty acids.
Many people simply can’t avoid over consuming omega 6 due to the way our society is set up, so the best way is to balance your omega 6 with some omega 3.
But what’s the dosage?
For every 5 grams of omega 6 fat you eat, you should get 1 gram of omega 3 fat.
That can be kind of complicated to figure out though. So generally speaking, if you get a high quality fish oil supplement, the directions on the back will give you the daily recommended dosage and should work pretty well for you.
I say that it should work pretty well for you because in reality anything between a 1:1 to 1:5 ratio of omega3 to omega 6 ratio is pretty good. Anything higher than 1:5 is getting a little “iffy” and you should think about supplementing with more omega 3. Most good supplement companies know this, and work out what the average person eats, and then comes up with a dosage that should put you into the 1:1 to 1:5 ratio.
So if you don’t want to do the math yourself. Just check out a good supplement, take the recommended dosage and call it good.
